Stamped concrete is a regular reinforced slab with two extra steps: color, added to the mix or broadcast as a hardener before the finish, and texture, pressed into the surface with mats while the concrete is still plastic. Done well, it reads as travertine, slate, flagstone, cobble or wood plank — the patterns you see on the pool decks in Tradition and PGA Village — and it costs $14 to $22 a square foot instead of the $16 to $28 that real pavers or stone run installed. Because it's one slab, there are no joints for weeds, no ants, and nothing to sink individually the way a paver does when the sand base washes out.
The Florida-specific part is heat and sun. Dark, dense stamped colors get hot enough to burn feet on a pool deck in August, and cheap acrylic sealers turn white and peel in a year of UV. We use lighter integral colors and a light-reflecting release on pool decks, a breathable penetrating sealer or a UV-stable acrylic depending on the surface, and we tell you honestly that a stamped deck needs re-sealing every two to three years. Textured overlays — a stamped skin over an existing sound slab — are also available where the old pool deck is structurally fine.

How much does stamped concrete cost in Port St. Lucie?
$14 to $22 per square foot installed for a new stamped slab, depending on pattern, color count and borders — roughly 60 to 80 percent of what pavers cost and about double plain broom-finished concrete. Overlays on an existing slab run $8 to $14.
Does stamped concrete get hot?
Dark colors do, like any dark surface in the Florida sun. On pool decks we use lighter integral colors and a reflective release and we'll put a sample in the sun for you before you choose. Light stamped concrete runs cooler than dark pavers and about the same as light ones.
Will it crack?
Concrete cracks at control joints by design; we cut or hand-tool the joints along the pattern's grout lines so they disappear. Random cracking comes from a bad base or no reinforcement — which is what we're paid to prevent.
Stamped concrete or pavers?
Pavers can be lifted and reset if the base washes out, which happens in Port St. Lucie's sand; stamped concrete can't. Stamped concrete is cheaper, weeds and ants can't get in, and it's one solid slab. On a pool deck with a good base we usually recommend stamped; on a driveway that floods, pavers. How often does it need sealing?
Every two to three years on a pool deck or patio, three to five on a shaded walkway. It's a half-day job and it's what keeps the color from fading.
