Walkways are the flatwork that gets done wrong most often in Port St. Lucie, because they're small and cheap and a lot of contractors pour them on raked sand with no reinforcement. Two summers later the sections tilt where the sprinklers run, the joint at the driveway opens up, and the path to the front door is a trip hazard. We pour walkways the way we pour driveways: excavated, compacted base, fiber or wire reinforcement, four inches thick, control joints every four to five feet, and a finish that's not slick when it rains.

How wide should a front walkway be?
Four feet is the comfortable width for two people; three is the minimum and feels tight at the door. Most of the walks we pour in Port St. Lucie are four feet with a paver border that brings them to five.
Why did my old walkway sink?
Poured on loose sand with no base and no reinforcement, then undermined by the sprinklers. Ours are excavated and compacted, reinforced, and pitched so water runs off instead of under.
Do I need a permit for a walkway?
Not for a private walkway on your lot in Port St. Lucie. Anything in the public right-of-way — the sidewalk along the street — needs a ROW permit, which we pull.
Can you match the walkway to my driveway?
Yes: same finish and color, and a control joint at the transition so the two slabs move independently and the joint stays clean.
Can you lift a sunken walkway instead of replacing it?
Often, with polyurethane foam injection — see our leveling service. If the slab is broken into small pieces, replacement is cheaper.
